So today during my drawing class, my teacher Bro. Call decided to bring some of his work in for us to see. I've really been looking forward to this because Bro. Call is an illustrator and does work for magazines, children's books, little kid readers, even for the church in the Ensign, Liahona, and The Friend. So he rolls out a huge stack of paintings and showed us his old binder portfolio. It was incredible work, i even recognized a bunch of them from The Friend. So we pretty much spent an hour and a half going doing a question and answer session about his work, how he gets paid, how he gets contacts, etc. I was fascinating and i was very excited because what he does is what I'm doing, but a step further.
I've asked him questions before on where i should go with my art, suggestions for what classes to take next semester, what are good pieces in a portfolio, etc. He's always been most helpful in these areas, suggesting which teachers to take and what areas of art i really need to get good at. He's been pushing me towards majoring in Illustration- based on my portfolio review.
But after today, after seeing his work and understanding how illustration works, I'm really quite interested. So officially as of today I'm gearing myself for a career in Illustration. I can do it from home- which will be great whenever i become a wife and mother, i can get paid good money- which will definitely be a huge benefit, and i can have a lot of fun while doing it. It was just amazing because Bro. Call was showing us each step in how he does stuff- it's exactly how i do things.
Bro. Call has already been impressed with my skills and how i draw. He recommended a book for me to study and instructed me to take this one business class that will help me with getting my work out there, and suggested i obtain a good understanding of photo shop.
Anyways, I'm really excited for this chosen career path. Who knows if I'll end up doing this for my career, but as mom always says, "Pick a path and move forward, the Lord can direct you but you have to be moving first." So I've picked a path and will continue down it until the Lord directs me otherwise. Either way, I'll still be able to significantly improve my art talent and use it towards my current commissions... anyone need a portrait? ;)
