Roasted Beef? ...Cattle Branding @ the Andrus Ranch

This is my fabulous roommate Allyssa with her Bro. Dallin. She invited me to their family's ranch (owned by their great uncle) for cattle branding over memorial day weekend and wow, that was an adventure! (Note: these pictures may be disturbing to those passionate about animal rights) We ended up branding about 300 calfs, they had a system where 2 people administered the immunizations, one person in charge of the branding, and a couple in charge of castrating, two people applying mineral oil and antibiotics, and a whole bunch in charge of tackling and wrangling them into place. It was sad to see, but it doesn't hurt them as bad as we assume. It's like getting shots at the doctors office.

Such a beautiful area. From what i can remember, they mentioned they own approximately 1500 acers of land!

My dad warned me about the smell of burnt hair, I just wasn't prepared for how potent that smell could be! Holy Moly it was like a thick cloud that you tried to avoid. Sometimes they would catch fire. Allyssa was brave and did it, i couldn't bring myself around to do that.
This pretty much sumed up our experience with the food. Oooof. It was good solid outdoor cookin'. They make about 20 gallons of stew in two old milk cans over a fire. Sausage, ham slices, corn on the cob, sliced potatoes, carrots, cabbage, etc. Mmmm... we ate good. like, REAL good. You will NEVER go hungry at an Andrus outing. Brief summary, we had...

pancakes, eggs, bacon, juice
hardy fire cooked stew, rolls, salad, soda, dessert
roasted hot dogs over the fire, pasta salad, chips, and smores
Smoothies (at like 1 in the morning!)
Indian fry bread

It was like we'd finish with lunch and then they were rolling out dinner! I seriously gained like 10 lbs. from a weekend with the Andrus. They were certainly cooking for a crowd too! Their was about 100 or so people all family, friends of family, neighbors, girlfriends, etc. Quite a crowd, it was so fun! They had actually rented a lodge just down the road where about 60 or so people stayed (including us) it was HUGE! Kind of reminded me of the cabin we rented on the Hakes side way back when. HUGE living room and kitchen that was covered with a tables like in a cultural hall. Plenty of bedrooms filled with bunkbeds, it was a lot of fun!
Allyssa's cousin's kids were so darn cute!! We had a blast together playing with the baby kittens, roasting hot dogs, and goofing around the grassy yard (there were a TON of kids of all ages, felt like home).
Barn dances, late night hot tub, story time, peeling potatoes with all the ladies, feeding sheep, sunday games, goofy kids= such a fun outing! I would never want to actually live on a ranch, but I really enjoyed the experience. Their family was so welcoming and a joy to be around.
