Gary pulled at my competitive nature and convinced us both to go and donate at the school's blood drive.
G: "Come, you can do it." K: "Ok, I'll do it if you do it"
G: "Mmm...if you do it i'll watch"
K: "Uh uh... not happening... If I do it you have to do it too."
G: "Ok."
K: "Ok..."
(*shoot!*)
Being both first time blood donors we were understandably a little nervous, especially when the appointments we made were a week in advance! But we both figure we could do it if we had another newbie sitting along side us. :D We arrive with good time, anxiously await our turn to do our brief medical history and finger poke. That honestly wasn't bad. They finally prop me in a chair, kick up the feet, and put on that arm cuff pressure thing and finger around my veins. Hmm... it's not doing it for him so he moves to my left arm. Still adding pressure and fingering around... Nothing. My veins are a little weird. He grabs another nurse for a second opinion and they keep adding pressure and fiddling around with my arm.
Nothing.
"Well, we can either go ahead and try- though it would take longer and it would be very painful, or you can go grab some pizza and juice and go socialize."
Why?
My veins are simply TOO small and overlapping.
He pulled out the cap for the needle and put it on my vein for comparison.
Vein is this ___ big
Needle is ______ big
Yup, so he didn't like the look of it so he sent me on my merry way. It was kind of a let down really. As for Gary? He dutifully endured the procedure and officially became a blood donor! This became his profile pic about 6 minutes after getting home.
On a side note, I made the comment that i was bummed that i couldn't wear the tape around my arm and look all "cool". He leaned over to his nurse and said he had a friend who couldn't donate because of "too small veins" (he accused me of bribing, though he understood) and wanted to look cool too. I think the finishing touch was when he mentioned i was a cashier on campus and would be free advertising. Needless to say I walked into work that day with my arm proudly taped up and a donor sticker on my vest!
Oh darn, guess i missed out on that life adventure. Guess i better stick to service rather than sticking needles in my arm... that's alright by me! Happy Friday!
